Hi! This is Mickey! It's that time of year again...just hours until the first game of the Mustangs' 2017 campaign. As you already know, it will be against the Wildcats of Sonora High School. The Mustangs traveled to Tracy for their scrimmage on the 19th. The D-line looked really good.
Last year, the Cats defeated us for the first time in a decade, 27-13. They finished the season last year with an overall record of 11-1, going 6-0 in the Mother Lode League. After finishing the regular season 10-0, the Wildcats faced the Modesto Christian Crusaders, whom they handled 56-21 to move on to face the Capital Christian Cougars. They lost that game 33-30 to finish the season at 11-1. Sonora has a new QB this year, though. They are coached by Brian Craig, who has been coaching Sonora since 2009. Since then, he's had an overall record of 66-29. Sonora's Kane Rodgers won the Modesto Bee's #1 returning player. Out of the list of 50, 18 were from the VOL and 5 from Sonora. The Bee awarded 6 Oakdale players:
28. Zac Campbell #8
19. Jace Krick #9
18. Bronson Harmon #22
13. Matt Kjeldgaard #38
6. Cameron Cherry #20
3. Nico Sarale #55
Also, a new tradition will begin this year. In honor of two of the great football communities in the area, both teams will represent their town pride by wearing home uniforms. Sonora will wear black, and Oakdale red. Our QB, #6 Marc Dickson, will be returning, along with 12 other returning starters. The quest for back-to-back state championships begins Friday Night, and I hope that you're as excited as the team is!
Bold prediction of the week:
Jace Krick gets a pick-6
My pick this week is...
OAKDALE-24, SONORA-13
GO MUSTANGS!
